Let F be a field of prime characteristic p. Let G be a finite group, let N be a normal subgroup of G, let D be a p-Sylow subgroup of N and suppose that \(G=NC_ G(D)\) where \(C_ G(D)\) is the centralizer of D in G. By mainly ring-theoretic methods the author generalizes results given by \textit{W. Feit} [The representation theory of finite groups (1982; Zbl 0493.20007)] and also work of \textit{J. L. Alperin} [J. Algebra 43, 694-698 (1976; Zbl 0367.20006)] and of \textit{E. C. Dade} [ibid. 45, 254-258 (1977; Zbl 0376.20003)]. He proves, for example, that if \(B_ 0(N)\) is the principal block of FN and if \(\pi:FG\to F(G/N)\) is the natural epimorphism then \(\pi\) induces a one-one correspondence between blocks B of FG with \(BB_ 0(N)\neq 0\) and blocks of F(G/N) and that if B is a block with defect group Q such that \(BB_ 0(N)\neq 0\) then \(Q\cap N\) is a Sylow p-subgroup of N and QN/N is a defect group of the block \(\pi\) (B) of F(G/N).
