Let \(x_ 1,x_ 2,...,x_ n\) be n unit vectors in a normed space X and define \(M=Ave\{\|\sum^{n}_{i=1}\epsilon_ ix_ i\|:\epsilon_ i=\pm 1\}.\) It is proved that there exists a set \(A\subset\{1,2,...,n\}\) of cardinality \(k\geq [\sqrt{n}/(2^ 7M)]\) such that \(\{x_ i\}_{i\in A}\) is 16M-isomorphic to the natural basis of \(\ell^ k_{\infty}\). This improves significantly the known results concerning embedding of \(\ell^ k_{\infty}\) in finite dimensional Banach spaces. It is also proved that for every \(\epsilon >0\) there exists a constant \(C(\epsilon)\) such that every normed space of dimension n either contains a \((1+\epsilon)\)-isomorphic copy of \(\ell^ m_ 2\) for some m satisfying \(\ln \ln m>{1\over2}\ln\ln n\) or contains a \((1+\epsilon)\)-isomorphic copy of \(\ell^ k_{\infty}\) for some k satisfying \(\ln \ln k>{1\over2}\ln\ln n-C(\epsilon)\). These results follow from some new theorems in extremal finite set theory.
