The impulsively generated magnetohydrodynamic flow at a rare stagnation point has been investigated. The present work resolves some of the differences existing in the earlier works on the topic [\textit{S. Leibovich}, J. Fluid Mech. 29, 401-413 (1967; Zbl 0204.289 and \textit{J. Buckmaster}, ibid. 38, 481-498 (1969; Zbl 0187.253) and Quart. J. Appl. Math. 24, 373-386 (1971; Zbl 0227.76142)].
