The paper claims to correct an error in a paper of \textit{H. Brézis} and \textit{J. A. Goldstein} [Improp. posed Bound. Value Probl., Conf. Albuquerque 1974, 65-75 (1975; Zbl 0318.35072)], noting that this error was not picked up by the introduction given by Mathematical Reviews (M.R. 57 {\#}16883) or the review in Zentralblatt für Mathematik. The contents of the paper are best paraphrased from the writer's own words: ''The title of the paper is borrowed from the article loc. cit.; so are some of the theorems. But the proofs presented for these theorems do not quite hit the target. While the theorems assert that non-constant solutions u(t) of a certain abstract differential equation grow no less than linearly at infinity, the proofs end up trying to show that \(\| u(t)\|^ 2\) is a convex function of t. However, from this convexity it can only be deduced that \(\| u(t)\|\) grows not slower than \(| t|^{1/2}.''\)
