    Let \(\Sigma^{2m}(k)\) be the 2m-sphere \(\Sigma^{2m}\) whose stable complex structure is given by \(k\sigma \in \tilde K(\Sigma^{2m})\cong Z\{\sigma \}.\) It is shown that there exists a semi-free unitary \(S^ 1\)-action fixing the disjoint union of \(\Sigma^{2m}(k_ j)\), \(j=1,2,...,u\), whose normal bundle has the mth Chern class \(\lambda_ jg\in \tilde H^{2m}(\Sigma^{2m})\cong Z\{g\},\) if and only if \(\sum k_ j=0\) and \(\sum \lambda_ j=0\). This result implies that a semi-free unitary \(S^ 1\)-manifold where the action fixes a homology sphere is a boundary.
