We observe that the proof by \textit{R. Eising} [Syst. Control Lett. 2, 225- 229 (1982; Zbl 0529.93028)] of the pole assignment theorem for linear systems over a principal ideal domain actually remains valid for any elementary divisor ring. For large classes of rings matrix characterizations of pole assignability are given.
