The shock structure problem is investigated in the framework of the \textit{W. Israel} theory [Ann. Phys. 100, 310-331 (1976)] of irreversible thermodynamics in the ultrarelativistic limit. It is shown that a regular shock structure may exist only for low Mach numbers. Similarities and differences with the classical case studied by \textit{A. M. Anile} and the first author [Meccanica 16, 149-156 (1981; Zbl 0486.76087)] are discussed.
