In the paper a new method for the design of 2-dimensional digital filters is presented. The filter is built up from particular forms of causal second-order filters. By imposing a quadrantal symmetry and an about \(45^ 0\) line symmetry, an octagonal symmetry is obtained. An algorithm to compute the filter coefficients by use of the Fletcher-Powell nonlinear optimization routine is given. Finally, examples of computation for a low-pass and for a high-pass filter are presented.
