[Part I, cf. Arch. Math. 42, 344-347 (1984; Zbl 0528.20024).] - Let G be a finite group and n be a positive integer dividing the order of G. Let \(L_ n(G)=\{x\in G|\) \(x^ n=1\}\). Then by a theorem of Frobenius \(| L_ n(G)| =c_ nn\) for some integer \(c_ n\). Frobenius conjectured that if \(| L_ n(G)| =n\), then \(L_ n(G)\) forms a subgroup of G. This has been reduced to the case that G is non-abelian simple. By the classification of finite simple groups it thus remains to be shown that the conjecture is valid for alternating groups, simple groups of Lie type and sporadic groups. The purpose of the present paper is to prove the following theorem: The conjecture of Frobenius is true for the following groups of Lie type: \(E_ 6(q)\), \({}^ 2E_ 6(q)\), \(E_ 8(q)\), \({}^ 3D_ 4(q)\).
