    Let D[0,1) be the set of real functions f defined on [0,1) for which \(| f(t)| \leq A(1-t)^{-\alpha}\) \((0\leq t<1)\), where \(A\geq 0\) and \(\alpha\geq 0\) are constants which may both depend on f. The Meyer-König and Zeller operators \(M_ n\) are defined on D[0,1) by \[ \] \((M_ nf)(x)=(1-x)^{n+1}\sum^{\infty}_{k=0}\left( \begin{matrix} n+k\\ k\end{matrix} \right)x^ kf(\frac{k}{n+k})\) \((0\leq x<1\); \(n\in {\mathbb{N}}).\) If the functions \(e_ r(r=0,1,2)\) are defined by \(e_ r: x\to x^ r\), it is well known that \((M_ ne_ 0)(x)=1\) \((0\leq x<1:\) \(n\in {\mathbb{N}})\), \((M_ ne_ 1)(x)=x\) \((0\leq x<1:\) \(n\in {\mathbb{N}}).\) In this paper an explicit expression for \((M_ ne_ 2)(x)\) is determined in terms of a convergent power series in x, which in particular is a hypergeometric series. Various applications of this result are given.
