In applications of large scale systems, it is common practice to lump variables together and thus obtain a system of lower order. The question whether this is mathematically justifiable and preserves structural properties of the original system dynamics is an important one. In this paper it is shown that observability plays a crucial role in the question of ''lumpability''.
