Consider a compact convex subset \({\mathcal B}\) of \({\mathbb{R}}^ s\) (s\(\geq 2)\) containing the origin as an inner point, and suppose that its boundary \(\partial {\mathcal B}\) is of class \(C^{\infty}\) and has finite nonzero Gaussian curvature throughout. For a large parameter t, denote by A(t) the number of lattice points (of the standard lattice \({\mathbb{Z}}^ s)\) in the ''blown up'' body \(\sqrt{t} {\mathcal B}\), by V the volume of \({\mathcal B}\), and put \(P(t)=A(t)-V t^{s/2}\). It had been proved by \textit{E. Hlawka} [Monatsh. Math. 54, 1-36 (1950; Zbl 0036.309)] that \(P(t)=O(t^{s(s-1)/2(s+1)})\) and by the author [Arch. Math. 45, 284-288 (1985; Zbl 0532.10033)] that \(P(t)=\Omega (t^{(s-1)/4} (\log t)^{1/4}).\) In the present paper, this last result is slightly improved for dimension s incongruent to 1 modulo 4. Theorem. Under the conditions stated, for \(s\equiv 2,3,4 (mod 8),\) \(P(t)=\Omega_-(t^{(s-1)/4}\quad (\log t)^{1/2-1/2s}),\) whereas for \(s\equiv 6,7,8 (mod 8),\) \(P(t)=\Omega_+(t^{(s-1)/4}\quad (\log t)^{1/2-1/2s}).\)The method of proof combines the classical argument via the Borel mean value exhibited in a recent paper of \textit{J. L. Hafner} [J. Number Theory 15, 36-76 (1982; Zbl 0495.10027)] with E. Hlawka's asymptotic results on exponential integrals over such general convex bodies.
