The author has previously shown that, assuming \(\square_{\kappa}\), for infinite cardinal \(\kappa\) there is a \(\kappa\)-special \(\kappa^+\)- Aronszajn tree with no \(\lambda\)-Aronszajn nor \(\theta\)-Cantor subtrees for any regular \(\lambda \neq \kappa^+\) and infinite \(\theta\) [Ann. Math. Logic 20, 233-268 (1981; Zbl 0469.03036)]. Most of the paper under review is devoted to applications of this result [previously announced in Abstr. Am. Math. Soc. 3, 185-186 (1982)] to establish negative square bracket partition relations, for instance that \(\square_{\kappa}\) implies \(\kappa^+\nrightarrow [\lambda]^ 2_{\kappa,<\lambda}\) for every \(\lambda\leq \kappa\), and a stepping up result for negative square bracket relations.
