For G a semi-simple algebraic group over a field of positive characteristic we consider the Jantzen conjecture on the behaviour of homomorphisms between adjacent Weyl modules. We prove that this conjecture has some very strong consequences for the G-module structure of Weyl modules: 1. There is a precise relation between the composition factor multiplicities in the layers of the Jantzen filtration for a Weyl module and the coefficients in the ''inverse'' Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. 2. The Jantzen filtration of a Weyl module coincides with the socle series. 3. The radical and the socle series for ''generic'' Weyl modules coincide.
