The author extends to non-graded homogeneous groups the construction of a commutative approximate identity performed by Folland and Stein in the case of graded ones [\textit{G. B. Folland} and \textit{E. M. Stein}, Hardy spaces on homogeneous groups (1982; Zbl 0508.42025)]. The idea is to construct the commutative approximate identity as a stable semigroup of smooth measures, whose infinitesimal generator plays the role of the Rockland operator in Folland and Stein's construction.
