This paper presents a limited summary of the mathematical results and unanswered questions concerning the relation of the Boltzmann equation to fluid dynamics. Regions of regular flow, initial layers, and shocks will be addressed. There has been substantial recent progress on boundary value problems, but it has not yet been directly related to the fluid dynamic limit and will not be discussed here.
