This paper deals with questions of the following general nature: If two groups G and H have isomorphic normal lattices and G belongs to a specified class of groups, what can be said about H, in particular, when is H isomorphic to G? The results obtained here are often under less stringent conditions on H than those imposed by earlier authors. Examples of results: If G is abelian of torsionfree rank \(r_ 0\leq 2\) and N(G)\(\cong N(H)\), then H is isomorphic to G (Theorem B). If G is finitely generated torsionfree nilpotent of class two and noncyclic, if further N(G)\(\cong N(H)\), then H is finitely generated torsionfree of class two (Theorem D). If G is a nilpotent p-group of class at least three and if furthermore N(G)\(\cong N(H)\) and H' is hypercentral, H is a hypercentral p-group.
