X-splines of odd degree (Q1081770): Difference between revisions

Piecewise polynomial approximants p of degree \(2n+1\) and class \(C^ n\) are studied, approximating functions f in \(C^{2n+2}\). Errors of approximation as well as jump discontinuities of derivatives of orders \(n+1,...,2n+1\) of p are estimated in terms of values of \(f^{(j)}- p^{(j)}\) at the breakpoints, \(1\leq j\leq n\), and of \(f^{(2n+2)}\). General classes of periodic and non-periodic X-splines of degree \(2n+1\) are introduced. Four particular splines \(p_ I-p_{IV}\) with optimal properties of approximation and admitting simple construction are presented.
