The author shows that the lattice of all closed subgroups (resp. closed connected subgroups) of a compact group (resp. a pro-Lie group) ordered by reverse inclusion is an algebraic, indeed arithmetic, lattice. The compact elements form ideals in these lattices and are explicitly determined. The question of whether forming lattices of closed subgroups commutes with projective limits is at the heart of the investigation.
