Let A be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let \(C^ r(A)\) be the class of finitely generated A-modules of finite projective dimension and of codimension \(\geq r.\) It is shown that the corresponding Grothendieck group \(K^ r(A)\) is generated by cyclic modules \([A/I]\) which are perfect of codimension r. For \(r\leq 2 K^ r(A)\) is generated by such modules where I is generated by a regular sequence. This is not true for \(K^ 3(A)\) as is shown by an example built on the module with negative intersection multiplicity with an A-module A/P, P a height one prime ideal, given by \textit{Dutta}, \textit{Hochster} and \textit{McLaughlin}.
