The paper deals with the optimal design of a mechanical system (distributed parameter system) in conditions of uncertainty, where the optimality is subjected to the ''worst possible'' external loads. The authors point out several difficulties arising in the treatment of this problem and present the background to an appropriate mathematical setting. A numerical technique, based on some sensitivity concepts, is developed and discussed together with other possible numerical approaches.
