This paper discusses a finite element approximation of the Dirichlet problem for a second order selfadjoint elliptic equation by the boundary penalty method. Based on a mathematical foundation some theorems are proved for uniqueness and existence of solutions. Finally, a numerical example is presented for confirmity of optimal \(H^ 1\) solution.
