The partial finite diagonalizability of a linear and continuous operator on a complex Banach space with respect to the elements of its peripheral spectrum is studied. The concept of peripheral finite diagonalization property is introduced and several equivalent conditions and some necessary ones for such a property are given. Convenient examples specify the connections between these conditions and show which of them are not sufficient. The concept of peripheral compactness of a linear and continuous operator is also introduced and several properties of such operators are studied. In particular, the necessary conditions above are proved to be also sufficient for the peripheral finite diagonalization property in the case of a peripherally compact operator.
