It is shown that for a separable subspace X of a Banach lattice E not containing a copy of C(\(\Delta)\), the following dichotomy holds: either \(X^*\) is separable or X contains a copy of \(\ell_ 1\) that is complemented in E. Various operator factorization theorems for operators from or into a Banach lattice are also established. As an application one gets the following results: If T is an operator on a Banach lattice E which does not preserve a copy of \(c_ 0\) (resp. \(c_ 0\) nor \(\ell_ 1)\) then \(T^ 2(resp\). \(T^ 3)\) factors through a weakly sequentially complete (resp. reflexive) Banach lattice. Two counterexamples to related problems are also given.
