(From the authors' summary.) The authors have considered semidiscrete and single step fully discrete approximation to the solutions of the time dependent incompressible elasticity equations. Two methods of dealing with the constraint are analysed: (a) a formulation involving a 'discrete' form of incompressibility condition and (b) a penalty formulation. \(H^ 1\)- and \(L^ 2\)-error estimates are obtained.
