In the theory of scattering of a monochromatic scalar wave off a compact obstacle, a key role is played by the Sommerfeld radiation condition. Often other stronger conditions are established. These are the principle of limiting amplitude (L.AM.) and the principle of limiting absorption (L.AB.). When one is faced with the problem of the scattering off an unbounded smooth interface separating two media, the radiation condition is not easy to establish. The author has established the L.AM. and L.AB. for the scattering of monochromatic scalar waves off an interface assumed to be smooth and satisfying a regularity condition on the normal, with the condition that the wave field and its normal derivative are continuous across the interface. The L.AB. is established for a Hilbert space \(L^ 2_{-2}\) and the L.AM. for the Hilbert space \(H^ 2_{-3}\). The radiation condition is not established.
