The Heisenberg-Weyl algebra can be thought of as the abstract associative algebra generated by the operators of differentiation and multiplication by \(\kappa\). Here one studies the algebras obtained by replacing the derivative by (1) the usual finite difference operator (FD algebra) and (2) a difference operator corresponding to a scaling shift (qHW algebra). The basic representations of these algebras are found and various examples and illustrations of the techniques involved are presented. Corresponding to one-variable Fock spaces, the qHW (Arik-Coon space) and FD analogs are discussed.
