In contrast to a system with a finite number of degrees of freedom, the canonical commutation and anti-commutation relations (CCR and CAR respectively) for a system with \(\aleph_ 0\) degrees of freedom have many unitarily inequivalent representations. Consequently, not all automorphisms of the CCR and CAR algebras are implementable via unitary operators in the Hilbert space of representations. A linear automorphism (of both CCR and CAR) that is not unitarily implementable in the Fock representation is here called a Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation provided it preserves the basic physical symmetries at a fixed time. The group of Bogoliubov-Valatin transformations is rendered implementable by enlarging the representation space from a Hilbert space to a Hilbert bundle (on a suitable base space).
