It is demonstrated that the standard procedure for treating initial value problems with the IST almost works also for boundary value problems. The only remaining difficulty preventing one from solving integrable systems with boundary values such as the forced Toda lattice is the determination of one set of scattering data from the boundary value. Once this would be known, then the forced Toda lattice would become completely integrable.
