The rapid outpouring of fluid from capillaries into tissue following burn injury, or the increased filtration that occurs to meet the elevated metabolic requirements of cells during exercise, is thought to be a result of transient osmolality of particles produced in the tissue. To examine this hypothesis, we have developd and analyzed a mathematical model of capillary-tissue exchange and determined the time course of events following increased metabolic production of a substance within the tissue.
