For \(2\pi\)-periodic functions f we consider the Lipschitz spaces \(X^{r,\beta}\) with norm \(\| f\|_{p,r,\beta}=\| f^{(r)}\|_{p,\beta}+\sum^{r}_{k=0}\| f^{(k)}\|_ p,\) where \(\| f\|_{p,\beta}=\sup_{h\neq 0}| h|^{- \beta}\| f(\circ +h)-f(\circ)_ p,\) \(0\leq \beta \leq 1\), \(r=0,1,..\). and \(X=L_ p\), \(1\leq p<\infty\), or \(X=C\). If \(f\in X^{m,\alpha}\), then we get error estimates for the de la Vallée Poussin means of the Fourier sum \(S_ nf\) in the norm \(\| \circ \|_{p,r,\beta}\). The order of convergence depends essentially on \(m+\alpha -r-\beta >0\). In case of the Fejér sums the results are formulated with explicit constants in the error term. Analogous estimates are proved for \(f\in C^{m,\alpha}\) and the corresponding means of interpolatory polynomials on equidistant nodes. For some separable subspace of \(X^{m,\alpha}\) the estimates can be sharpen to a ``small-o''-type. The paper generalizes results of \textit{S. Prößdorf} [Math. Nachr. 69, 7-14 (1976; Zbl 0319.42002)], \textit{L. Leindler} [Stud. Sci. Math. Hung. 14, 431-439 (1981; Zbl 0443.41016)] and \textit{R. Haverkamp} [Math. Z. 179, 59-67 (1982; Zbl 0458.42004)].
