An initial-boundary value problem with a Dirichlet boundary condition for the system \[ \rho u_{tt}=\mu \Delta u+(\lambda +\mu)\text{grad div} u \] is considered in the exterior of a bounded star-shaped obstacle with smooth boundary. It is proved that for initial data with compact support the local energy of the solution decays as \(t^{-1}\) for even m (a number of spatial variables) and as \(\exp(-\epsilon^ t)\) for odd m. It is very likely that no result in this topic obtained by C. Moravetz, R. Melrose etc. during the last ten years is familiar to the author.
