Results proved include a reconstruction of a Hermitian matrix pencil from its Jordan structure and inverse spectral theorems for real regular linear matrix pencils. Some questions of the first author and \textit{J. Maroulas} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 123, 238-261 (1987; Zbl 0637.34017)], on the freedom of choice in the definition of spectral properties of the quadratic pencil \(\lambda^ 2I+\lambda B+C\) when a right diviser \(\lambda\) I-Z is prescribed, are also clarified and answered.
