The author investigates complex surfaces which are self-dual or anti- self-dual with respect to a Hermitian metric. He proves that, if the Hermitian metric is self-dual and Einstein, then the holomorphic sectional curvature must be constant. (This is obtained by a careful pointwise analysis of the curvature conditions.) The author also characterizes compact Hermitian surfaces as locally Kählerian with a specific relation between the two scalar curvatures that one defines on Hermitian manifolds.
