Zur Bestimmung von Näherungslösungen von Differentialgleichungsproblemen in unendlichen Bereichen bedient man sich häufig der Methode künstlicher Ränder. Dies beinhaltet die Einführung eines künstlichen Randes und die Angabe einer angenäherten Randbedingung, um dann das Problem in einem endlichen Bereich zu lösen. Die Verf. betrachten das spezielle eindimensionale Problem eines semi-infiniten, inhomogenen elastischen Stabes unter reiner Längsanregung. Für dieses Problem werden durch Anwendung der geometrischen Optik im Laplace-Transformationsbereich effiziente künstliche Randbedingungen gefunden, die mit Hilfe eines Stabilitätskriteriums zu Lösungen führten. Numerische Beispiele für einen Stab konstanter Dichte und monoton anwachsendem Elastizitätsmodul mit kurzer Puls- oder harmonischer Anregung am Ende \(x=0\) zeigen die Effektivität der behandelten Methode.
