Wildness of the rank two quiver provides a link between the study of rational matrix invariants and that of stable vector bundles over the projective plane. The author aims to show that the rationality problem may also be of interest to geometers. Using the results of \textit{K. Hulek} [in Vector bundles and differential equations, Proc., Nice 1979, Prog. Math. 7, 113-144 (1980; Zbl 0446.14006)] the author shows that the field \(K_{2,n}\) of rational invariants is the function field of the moduli space \(M(n,0,n)\) of stable (rank n) vector bundles over the projective plane with Chern numbers \((0,n)\). Therefore, Formanek's results imply the rationality of \(M(3,0,3)\) and \(M(4,0,4)\). The author also recovers a recent result of Van der Bergh showing that the field of rational n by n matrix invariants is the function field of the generic Jacobian variety for smooth plane curves of degree n.
