Let \({\mathcal A}\) be a *-subalgebra of B(H), \(\delta\) be a closed *- derivation \({\mathcal A}\to B(H)\), and let S be symmetric and closed such hat \(\delta \subset \delta_{iS}\), i.e. for \(A\in D(\delta)\) \[ AD(S)\subset D(S),\quad \delta (A)|_{D(S)}=i[S,A]|_{D(S)}. \] A symmetric \(\delta\)-extension of S, say, T, is defined by \(\delta \subset \delta_{iT}\). provided that S has equal and finite deficiency indices, \(1\not\in {\mathcal A}\), and \({\mathcal A}\) does not have finite-dimensional representations, then there exists self-adjoint \(\delta\)-extensions of S. Among others, the question of maximal \(\delta\)-extensions is investigated.
