This paper contains a partial solution of a problem of \textit{F. J. MacWilliams} and \textit{N. J. A. Sloane} [The Theory of error-correcting codes (Amsterdam 1977; Zbl 0369.94008)] concerning the cyclicity of an extended ``classical'' Goppa code. The main idea of the proof is to represent the code as a ``geometric'' Goppa code over the rational function field and a result from the author [Automorphisms of geometric Goppa codes (to appear in J. Algebra)] which states that under certain assumptions all automorphisms of such geometric codes are induced by projective transformations.
