A binomial coefficient identity involving 5 parameters and due to \textit{L. A. Székely} [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 40, 171-174 (1985; Zbl 0573.05005)] is shown to be a symmetric version of the Pfaff-Saalschütz identity. A q-analogue is also established.
