The author introduces a new technique, symbolic implicit Monte Carlo (SIMC), for the numerical solution of radiation transport problems involving spontaneous emission. This new technique preserves the robustness of classical implicit Monte Carlo developed by \textit{J. A. Fleck jun.} and \textit{J. D. Cummings} [ibid. 8, 313-342 (1971; Zbl 0229.65087)] but removes the effective scattering term (which is a source of inefficiency for optically thick problems). The performance and accuracy of SIMC are compared with those of the usual effective scattering technique for the time-dependent description of a two-level system in slab geometry; moreover, the possibility of implementing SIMC on multiprocessors using shared memory is discussed.
