Let R be a complete discrete valuation ring. An isomorphism theorem for the endomorphism algebra E(M) of a mixed R-module is proved: Theorem. Let M be a reduced R-module that is neither torsion nor torsion free. Assume that every full-rank submodule of M contains a nice submodule B such that M/B is totally projective. If N is an R-module, then every algebra isomorphism of E(M) with E(N) is induced by an isomorphism of M with N. Examples of types of reduced mixed modules which meet the nice submodule hypothesis of the theorem are reduced modules M with torsion submodule T such that: \((1)\quad M\quad is\) of finite torsion-free rank, and \(T\subseteq \tilde T\) for some totally projective module \(\tilde T\) with \(\ell (\tilde T)<\ell (T)+\omega\); or \((2)\quad M\quad has\) torsion-free rank at most \(\aleph_ 0\), and T is totally projective (in particular, countably generated modules); or \((3)\quad M\quad is\) a Warfield module. Corollary. Let M be as in the theorem. Then every algebra automorphism of E(M) is induced by an automorphism of M. - An old question of I. Kaplansky is whether the conclusion of the corollary holds for all R- modules. Examples are given to show that this is not the case, as well as examples to demonstrate obstructions to generalizing the theorem.
