Let D be the open unit disc on the complex plane. The author gives the characterization of symbols f \((\in L^{\infty}(D))\) for which the associated Toeplitz \(T_ f\) or Hankel \(H_ f\) operators are compact on the Bergman space \(L^ 2_ a(D).\) The extension of these results to the cases of unit ball \(B_ n\) and polydisc \(D^ n\) in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\) is given in the last section. The upper and lower bounds of essential norms of Toeplitz or Hankel operators are also received. The essential spectrum of Toeplitz operators for functions f from AOP (analytic on the parts) is obtained.
