Let (X,g) be a Riemannian manifold with Laplacian \(\Delta\), and let A be a bounded \(\psi\) DO on \(L^ 2(X)\). The average \(\bar A\) of A is defined as the weak limit \(\bar A=\lim_{T\to \infty}1/(2T)\int^{T}_{-T}\exp (-it\sqrt{\Delta})A \exp (it\sqrt{\Delta})dt.\) The author studies \(\bar A\) in the case of a compact hyperbolic surface (X,g) with the geodesic flow \(G^ t\) ergodic.
