The building block of many high-resolution schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws is the averaging of an approximate Godunov solver. Instead, here is proposed to use as a building block the most robust Lax- Friedrichs solver. The main advantage is the simplicity: no Riemann problems are solved and here field-by-field decompositions are avoided. Total-variation entropy estimates are provided in the scalar case and numerical experiments are discussed.
