In this work the author studied the buckling and barrelling instabilities in finite elasticity. For this he considered the uniaxial compression of a two-dimensional elastic rectangle made of a hyperelastic material. He studied the mixed displacement-traction boundary value problem for the deformation x of the bar, in which its deformed length is prescribed, the surface traction at its ends has no tangential component and the lateral surfaces are stress-free. He first studied the sufficient conditions to ensure the existence of homogeneous deformation \(X_{\lambda}\), and then the conditions of instability. Finally he explored the necessary and sufficient conditions for barrelling instability, and in particular he showed that for a certain class of materials the bar will always become unstable by asymmetric buckling. This work is quite interesting and might be very useful for those research workers in the area of elastic stability theory.
