This paper investigates the relation between a linear order X and the maximal chains of its interval algebra. For example: Theorem. If X is a dense linear order with no \(\omega_ 1\)-saturated interval, then Intalg X has a countable maximal chain. Theorem. If X is an uncountable dense linear order, then there are two nonisomorphic maximal chains in Intalg X. Order types of maximal chains of Intalg [0,1) are characterized as order types of dense \(F_{\sigma}'s\) in [0,1] containing the endpoints 0 and 1. Countable gaps and limits of countable sequences are the main techniques used in the proofs.
