This is a short report on the main results of the author's thesis (TU Berlin 1990). A version of the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorem is exhibited where the chronology condition is replaced by a specific assumption on the behaviour of the boundary of the chronology violating set. Furthermore, it is sketched that to prevent singularities the region of causality violation must extend to infinity. [See also the author's paper in Classical Quantum Gravity 6, 1607-1611 (1989; Zbl 0684.53050)].
