Let X be a nonempty set, let G be an additive (but not necessarily commutative) group and let \(\phi\) be a map from G to X. Let M(X,G,\(\phi\)) be the near-ring of all maps from X to G where addition is defined pointwise and the product \(f\otimes g\) of two functions f,g\(\in M(X,G,\phi)\) is defined by \(f\otimes g=f\circ \phi \circ g\). Such a near- ring is referred to as a sandwich near-ring with sandwich function \(\phi\). These near-rings have been studied previously where X is a topological space, G is a topological group, \(\phi\) is a continuous map from G to X and the near-ring consists of all continuous functions from X to G. The former situation is, of course, the case where both the space and the group are discrete. The author proceeds with an exhaustive analysis of the ideals of M(X,G,\(\phi\)) and gets an enormous amount of information about those ideals. From these results, he is then able to determine precisely when M(X,G,\(\phi\)) is simple.
