The solution for the projection of a given point onto a linear manifold is studied. The linear manifold is defined as the solution set to a prescribed consistent linear algebraic system with a rank deficient matrix. Stability analysis of this solution due to perturbed data is presented. Numerical methods taking care of the rank deficiency are proposed. The relative error for the approximate solution due to round off is analyzed.
