In [Mat. Sb., Nov. Ser. 111(153), 334-383 (1980; Zbl 0427.10016)] \textit{N. V. Kuznetsov} gave a formula for the modular group which he quoted as an analogue of the Selberg trace formula. The principal idea behind that formula in fact is similar to that behind the trace formula. Take a group invariant integral operator acting on some homogeneous space. Then it has a geometric interpretation by means of its kernel and a spectral interpretation as it leaves invariant the spectral decomposition with respect to the group action. The comparison of these two data gives, if one considers traces, the trace formula and if one considers Fourier expansions, the formula of Kuznetsov. This formula has important applications to Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms or eigenvalues of Hecke operators, see [\textit{R. W. Bruggeman}, Banach Cent. Publ. 17, 31-74 (1985; Zbl 0589.10028)] and the references therein. In the paper under consideration the authors prove a formula of that kind in the more general setting of a noncompact semisimple Lie group G of real rank one and a lattice \(\Gamma\) in G which is not cocompact. They give their formula for trivial K-type and in the case of SU(n,1) for K- types of dimension one. The difficulty of such a generalization is to find the right substitutes for the Bessel functions occurring in the original formulas. The authors interpret the Bessel functions as Fourier transform of a certain intertwining operator which they studied in a previous paper. For special cases they also give explicit versions of their formula.
